Barrymore Burg / Barrymore Castle
After the conquest of Ireland by the Anglo-Normans this area was granted to Philip de Barry, who built a fortification in Castlelyons (Caisleán Ó Liatháin, castle in the kingdom Uí Liatháin). In the early 17th century David Barry replaced the fortification by a castle and made it the main residence of the family Barry. In 1771 the castle was destroyed by fire caused by the carelessness of some workers. The castle was not rebuilt, its stones were used to build near-by houses.
Alas, we do not find a public entrace to the castle. A part of the estate is occupied by a company which impedes a good view from the street.
