Nachdem er die Ländereien erworben hatte, baute Alexander Stewart ein einfaches Haus für seine Familie. Sein Sohn Robert erweiterte das Gebäude in den 1780ern. Roberts Sohn, auch Robert genannt, fügte um 1800 neue Seitenflügel an.

Die nächste Erweiterung kam in den 1840ern durch Charles Stewart, 3. Marquis von Londonderry, (1778 - 1854), der die sehr reiche Frances Anne Vane Tempest geheiratet hatte. Diese Umgestaltung entfernte die letzten Reste des ersten Hauses and erschuf das heutige Erscheinungsbild von Mount Stewart.

Der 4. und 5. Marquis von Londonderry wohnten nicht in Mount Stewart und das Haus begann zu verfallen.

Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 6. Marquis von Londonderry (1852 - 1915) und seine Frau Theresa kehrten nach Mount Stewart zurück, wo sie bedeutende Gäste, wie König Edward II und Königin Alexandra, empfingen.

Ihr Sohn Charles, 7. Marquis von Londonderry, (1878 - 1949) heiratete Edith Halen Chaplin, die das Innere des Hauses neu gestaltetet, dekorierte und möblierte. Ein Hobby, dem sie bis zu ihrem Tod 1959 mit Leidenschaft nachging.

After purchasing the property, Alexander Steward built a modest house for his family. His son Robert extended the building in the 1780s. Robert's son, also named Robert, added new wings around 1800.

The next extension was done in the 1840s by Charles Stewart, 3^rd Marquess of Londonderry, (1778 - 1854) who had married the very wealthy Frances Anne Vane Tempest. This remodelling removed the last remaining parts of the first house and created the present exterior of Mount Stewart.

The 4^th and 5^th Marquess of Londonderry did not live in Mount Stewart and the house started to decay.

Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 6^th Marquess of Londonderry, (1852 - 1915) and his wife Theresa returned to Mount Steward, where they entertained important guests, among them King Edward II and Queen Alexandria.

Their son Charles, 7^th Marquess of Londonderry, (1878 - 1949) married Edith Halen Chaplin, who redesigned, redecorated and furnished the house. A hobby she thoroughly enjoyed and continued until her death in 1959.
