Cahir

Cahir (an Chathair, Steinfort) besuchen wir nur kurz auf der Durchreise, lassen uns aber die Hauptattraktion nicht entgehen: Die Burg, dessen ältester Teil 1142 von Conchobar Ua Briain, König von Thomond am Ufer des Flusses Suir erbaut wurde. Im späten 14. Jahrhundert kam die mächtige Familie Butler, die Grafen von Ormond und spätere Barone Cahir, in den Besitz der Burg. Die Burg wurde in den kommenden Jahrhunderten öfters erweitert, aber auch belagert und erobert.

Bevor der letzte Baron Cahir 1961 starb, übergab er das Anwesen dem Staat. Es ist heute ein National Denkmal und wurde schon öfters als Kulisse für Filme verwendet.

We only make a short stop in Cahir (an Chathair, stone fort) while travelling through and aim for the main attraction: The castle. Its oldest parts were built by Conchobar Ua Briain, King of Thomond on the banks of the River Suir. In the late 14^th century the powerful Butler family, Earls of Ormond and later Barons Cahir, gained possession of the castle. In the centuries to come, the castle was expanded a few times, but also besieged and conquered.

Before the last Baron Cahir died in 1961, he handed the estate over to the state. Today it is a National Monument and has been used as a filming location for a few times
